T20 World Cup 2024: David Wiese hints retirement after heroics in Super Over against Oman, says 'don't know how many I have left'

The veteran player David Wiese played a heroic role with his all-round performance and helped Namibia pick up a huge win in the super-over against Oman in match 3 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, on June 3. However, Wiese gave a slight hint towards his retirement after the low-scoring thriller.

Namibia completely dominated Oman with the ball and ended their innings on just 109 runs. Pacer Ruben Trumpelmann was the star performer with the ball for them as he sent Oman's top three back to the pavilion by the third over itself. He finished with a total of four wickets and was well supported by David Wiese who grabbed three wickets and Gerhard Erasmus with two scalps. Bernard Scholtz also took one wicket.

Just when everyone thought it will be an easy win for Namibia, Oman's bowlers scripted one of the most exciting comebacks. From Bilal Khan striking on the second ball of the innings to Mehran Khan's masterclass spell of 3 overs in which he took three big wickets and gave away only 7 runs. In the 20th over of the Namibian innings Mehran helped Oman defend 5 runs. NAM needed 2 off the final ball but a run-out miss from Naseem Khushi on the final ball forced a super over.

David Wiese's heroics in super over

The T20 World Cup 2024 saw a super over after 12 years. The previous one happened back in 2012 between New Zealand and West Indies. Namibia batted first in the super over and got off to a blazing start as David Wiese hit a four and six on the first two balls against Bilal Khan. Then captain Erasmus hit back-2-back boundaries to end the over and helped Namibia post 21 runs. David Wiese then did the job with the ball as well and restricted Oman to just 10 runs make another comeback and won the match for his team by 11 runs.

David Wiese's hints retirement

The star all-rounder talked about how emotionally draining this match was and might have taken some years of his remaining career. He went on to say, he does not know how much more time he is left with.,

"Lost a couple of years tonight, don't know how many I have left in me now. Just been that kind of an emotionally draining game. (On his Super Over bowling) I had a feel for the wicket and knew what I had to execute in the Super Over. The pitch was difficult, was a bit two-paced, and different to what we expected. I think we adapted well and it was surely a pitch where you had to spend some time out there. I think if we were chasing 180, we would have had to attack without thinking too much about the pitch, so tough to say what would have been a par total on this wicket," said Wiese in the post-match presentation.
