T20 World Cup 2024 India squad: India selectors snub Shubman Gill, former cricketer explains the reason

India’s T20 World Cup has been announced and Shubman Gill was not named in India's squad for the Mega tournament, which is scheduled to begin from June 2 and will be held in the USA and West Indies. Ahead of the selection committee meeting, former Indian wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel opined that Shubman Gill might be a deserving candidate for the T20 World Cup 2024. However, Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Virat Kohli have secured their positions in the top order for India and it appears that the selection committee has no intention to change that setup.

The 39-year-old Parthiv added that there are many talented players in the Indian top order and Subhman Gill will have to wait for his chance to play in the T20 World Cup.

"It is difficult for Shubman Gill to make it to the T20 World Cup side. We have to look at the top three players that are in the squad. It is not about not having the ability, but someone has to miss out due to the abundance of talent in the side. Make no mistake, Shubman Gill is a deserving candidate, but these three are the best (Rohit, Yashasvi, Virat)," Parthiv Patel said on Jio Cinema.

Speaking on Sports Tak, Shubman Gill said that he wanted to play in the T20 World Cup to represent his country at the highest level.

 

"Obviously as a player, I want to be there and play the World Cup and get that opportunity to represent my country at the highest level – the biggest stage of T20 cricket. Having played in a World Cup last year, I have had my share of experiences, and it would be great to be able to play another World Cup. But I am not thinking that far ahead," Shubman Gill had told Sports Tak.

 

"I have scored almost 900 runs last season and if I had to be picked, I will be picked if not (then) best of luck to those who are picked," Gill had concluded.

Apart from Shubman Gill, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has snubbed big stars like KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
