T20 World Cup 2024: Jasprit Bumrah's bowling brigade choke Pakistan to win by 6 runs in a low-scoring game for ages

T20 World Cup 2024: Jasprit Bumrah stood out as he bagged three crucial wickets and conceded just 13 runs from his quota of four overs defending 119.

In another low-scoring encounter at Nassau County International Stadium, New York, India beat Pakistan by six runs despite registering their lowest T20I total against the arch-rivals. India were bowled out for 119 in 19 overs but the Jasprit Bumrah-led attack choked Pakistan’s unsettled batting lineup and beat the Babar Azam’s side by six runs. 

 

Pant rides on luck amidst record-breaking collapse

Earlier, Babar won the toss and opted to field first in overcast conditions. Rohit got off the mark with a six off Afridi. Rain interrupted after just one over. Virat Kohli got off the mark with a four before he fell to Naseem Shah on the third ball. Rohit hit a boundary in the same over before falling to Afridi in the next. He scored 13 runs from 12 balls. In the fifth over, Axar Patel justified the promotion up the order and hit a four and a six off Afridi. In the sixth over, Rishabh Pant was dropped twice and hit two fours. India were 50/2 after powerplay overs.  Naseem came back into the attack and knocked over Patel who scored 20 runs from 18 balls. 

After getting dropped again, Pant hit Haris Rauf for three consecutive fours in the 10th over. India were 81/3 after the halfway stage. Rauf came back well and dismissed Suryakumar for a single-digit score. Shivam Dube failed to make a mark and got out caught and bowled to Naseem. Mohammad Amir in the 15th over struck twice. Pant got caught by mid-off by Babar. He scored 42 runs from 31 balls including six fours. On the next ball, Ravindra Jadeja handed an easy catch to Wasim. In the 18th over, Rauf struck twice to dismiss Hardik Pandya and Bumrah. In the penultimate over, Arshdeep Singh was run out. Arshdeep and Mohammed Siraj’s contributions helped India post 119 on the board. 

Rizwan starts slow

In the run chase, Mohammad Rizwan and Babar helped Pakistan got off to a decent start with nine-run over. After a few tight overs, Bumrah got the prized wicket of Babar. He scored 13 runs from 10 balls. In the sixth over, Rizwan hit the first six of the innings off Pandya. Pakistan were 35/1 after powerplay overs. Usman Khan and Rizwan struggled in the middle overs. At the halfway stage, Pakistan were 57/1. Patel was introduced into the attack and he got the breakthrough. Usman Khan got out lbw for 15-ball 13. Fakhar Zaman hit a six in the same over to release the pressure. 

Indian bowlers choke Pakistan 

Pandya ended Zaman's stay at the crease with a short of length delivery. He scored 13 runs from eight balls. Bumrah came back into the attack and knocked over Rizwan. He departed after scoring 31 runs fro 44 balls. Wasim and Shadan Khan struggled under pressure. Pandya in his final over got the wicket of Shadab with a bouncer. He scored four runs from seven balls. In the 18th over, Siraj gave a few extras and conceded nine runs. In the penultimate over, Bumrah conceded just three runs and dismissed Iftikhar Ahmed. In the final over, Pakistan needed 18 runs. Arshdeep started with the wicket of Wasim. Naseem hit a couple of boundaries but Pakistan managed to post 113/7 and lost the match by six runs.
