Oman captain Aqib Ilyas blames batters for super over loss against Namibia, says 'should have gone for more runs'

Oman put up one of the most entertaining fights in the clash against Namibia in match 3 of the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, on June 3. However, it was not enough to ensure them a big win in the mega-tournament. After the match, Oman captain Aqib Ilyas highlighted the real reason behind their team's loss. 

Aqib Ilyas blames lack of runs for Oman's loss

Oman was bowled out on 109 runs by Namibia. Although, their bowlers did fight back well and took the match to the super over but the match could have gone their way if they had 10 -15 more runs on the board and Ilyas acknowledged this while saying their set batters should have gone for more runs as they were well adjusted to the pitch.

“Would have enjoyed the game if we would have won, but this is part of cricket. Credit goes to Namibia. (On first innings) Credit goes to Trumpelmann for the way he executed, and then our batters adjusted well. However, when we were set we should have gone for more runs. We knew the wicket was on the turning side, and we could have put more pressure with some more runs on the board. (On Super Over) I think Bilal is one of the best bowlers at associate level, but there are days when you don't execute. He was very clear and we were very clear that he should bowl. But he didn't execute and the batsman did well. That is cricket, it happens,” said Oman captain in the post-match innings.

 

Oman put up a great fight

 

After getting all out on 109 runs, everyone counted out Oman but their performance with the ball almost brought them to the doorstep of what could have been a famous victory. Mehran Khan managed to defend 5 runs in the last over of Namibia's innings. He even created a chance to win the match as Namibia needed 2 runs on the last ball and Wiese failed to hit the ball well but Oman's keeper missed a clear run-out opportunity under the pressure resulting in a super over. Wiese did not hold back in the super over and ensured his side got a crucial win.
