The T20 World Cup has seen eight exciting editions so far, with two nations leading the pack in terms of championship titles, England and West Indies. Both boast two victories each. England's first taste of T20 World Cup glory came in the Caribbean in 2010. They dominated the final against Australia, securing a convincing seven-wicket win. Fast forward to 2022 in Australia, and England repeated their success story. This time, they emerged victorious against Pakistan in the final, winning by five wickets. This 2022 triumph made England the first team to hold both the prestigious men's World Cup titles simultaneously – the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

West Indies first team to win the T20 World Cup twice

Meanwhile, the West Indies hold the distinction of being the first team to win the T20 World Cup twice. They secured their first title in 2012 on Sri Lankan soil, defeating the hosts by a comfortable 36 runs in the final.  Four years later, in 2016, the Caribbean team replicated their winning ways in India.  This time, they edged out England in a thrilling four-wicket victory in the final. While England and West Indies reign supreme, two other Asian teams – Pakistan and Sri Lanka – have also etched their names in T20 World Cup history by lifting the coveted trophy.

Pakistan's T20 World Cup journey has been a rollercoaster ride. After finishing second best in 2007, they bounced back to win the 2009 edition in style, crushing Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final.  This victory came just four years after their historic win in the 1992 ODI World Cup.  However, their hunger for the title wasn't satisfied.  They once again reached the finals in 2021 but fell short of glory.

Sri Lanka too has had its fair share of T20 World Cup drama.  While they finished runners-up in both the 2009 and 2012 finals, they finally grasped the coveted trophy in 2014.  Their six-wicket triumph over India in the final marked a significant moment in their cricketing history.

Australia, the undisputed king of the ODI World Cup with a staggering five titles, finally joined the T20 World Cup winners' circle in 2021.  They dominated New Zealand in the final, securing an eight-wicket victory. Interestingly, New Zealand holds the unique record of being the only team to have reached the T20 World Cup finals without ever lifting the trophy.

Speaking of records, India's batting maestro Virat Kohli reigns supreme.  Since his debut in 2012, he has amassed a staggering 1,141 runs, making him the leading run-scorer in T20 World Cup history.  The only other batsman to cross the 1,000-run mark is Sri Lanka's legendary Mahela Jayawardene.

When it comes to bowling, Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan takes the top spot.  This all-rounder has been a nightmare for batsmen, claiming a record 47 wickets in 36 matches played between 2007 and 2022. The T20 World Cup has been hosted by nine different nations so far.  While India held the rights for the 2021 edition, the global pandemic forced them to relocate the matches to the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

The tournament started with a 12-team format back in 2007, but it expanded to accommodate 16 teams from 2014 onwards.  Looking ahead, the future of the T20 World Cup promises even more excitement.  The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the 2024, 2026, 2028 and 2030 editions will feature a grand total of 20 teams, creating a truly global spectacle.
