'That wasn't a good call': Towhid Hridoy on controversial lbw that led to Bangladesh losing 4 leg byes in run chase due to DRS rule

Bangladesh players were hard done by in a low-scoring run chase when they missed out on four runs via leg byes due to DRS rule. During the run chase, Mahmudullah was given out lbw by the umpire Sam Nogajski but it turned out to be the wrong call and the decision was reversed as the ball was clearly going down the leg side. While Mahmudullah breathed a sigh of relief, he was also disappointed as four runs could have been added to Bangladesh’s score instead of it being a dot ball. 
 

As per the ICC rules, the ball is considered dead after umpire raises his finger. Even if the decision is reversed, no runs are added to the team's score via extras. Bangladesh's middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy feels that those four runs would have been helpful considering the situation of the game.
 

"Actually, to be honest, that wasn't a good call. It was a tight match. So, I think in my point of view, umpire gave out, but it's bit hard for us because those four runs would have changed the match scenario.
 

"So, I don't have anything to say about it," Hridoy said in the post-match press conference.

Hridoy questions other calls in run chase

Hridoy was also asked about whether he believes the rule needs to be changed. He did not criticise either for making the wrong call. However, he questioned the umpiring standards for a few other calls that did not go their way.
 

"See, the rule, what the ICC has done is not in my hands but at that time those four runs were very important for us. I think the umpire has given the call and the umpire can give a call. They are also human beings and they could have made a mistake.
 

"But we had two-three more wides which were not given. So, in a match like this, where hardly a run is being made in a low-scoring match, one or two runs are a big factor.
 

"So, I think those four runs or two wide runs were close calls. Even my out (dismissal) was the umpire's call. So, I think there is room for improvement in these areas. And we have nothing to do with rules that the ICC made," he added.

Hridoy’s knock in vain

Hridoy was the top run-scorer for Bangladesh in the run chase. He scored 37 runs from 34 balls before he was dismissed lbw by Kagiso Rabada in the 18th over. Bangladesh will take on the Netherlands in their next clash at Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown on June 13.
