'This is Rahul Dravid's job because...': Sourav Ganguly's key advice for India's head coach for Men in Blue's T20 World Cup campaign

Sourav Ganguly said that there are so many players in our India that it becomes difficult to select the playing XI. India will play their first match of the T20 World Cup on June 5.

The upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024 presents India with another chance to break their ICC trophy drought. While the Men in Blue have been a force to be reckoned with in bilateral series over the past decade, replicating that success on the global stage has proven elusive. India consistently performs well in the group stages of major tournaments, but struggles to convert that dominance into knockout victories. This was evident in the ODI World Cup last year, where their seemingly unstoppable run ended in a heartbreaking final loss to Australia. This defeat only extended India's longing for an ICC trophy.

India's quest for an ICC trophy continues at the 2024 T20 World Cup. They haven't lifted the World Cup in any format since 2011, and their last ICC title came in 2013. The T20 World Cup win also feels like a distant memory, dating back to 2007. However, former captain Sourav Ganguly remains optimistic. In a recent event, he lauded the team's depth, calling them a ‘fantastic side’. But his key message was for them to play with freedom. This uninhibited approach, according to Ganguly, is the key to unlocking their full potential and finally ending their ICC trophy drought.

"We hope that India will play well. All the players are good. There are so many players in our country that it becomes difficult to select the playing XI. We are spoiled for choices. They have a fantastic side," Ganguly told ANI.

"This is Rahul Dravid's job because he is the coach. We will just watch and cheer for India. I would just like to say that we have to play freely in the T20 format," he added when asked to offer guidance to the Rohit Sharma-led side," he added.

The T20 World Cup kicks off this Sunday (June 2nd) with the co-hosts, USA and Canada, facing off in Dallas. India, however, won't begin their journey until June 5. Drawn into Group A alongside Ireland, Pakistan, USA, and Canada, India will open their campaign against Ireland. This prestigious tournament presents them with a shot at their second T20 World Cup title.  If they achieve this feat, they'll become the first Asian team to win the tournament twice.

Last year's edition left a bitter taste, as India crashed out in the semi-finals after a crushing defeat to eventual champions, England. This year, the Men in Blue are determined to rewrite the script and make amends for that performance.
