Tim Southee achieves in just 5.2 overs what no bowler has managed since 1986 in Test cricket

Wickets tumbled on Day 1 of the second Test of the two-Test series between New Zealand and Bangladesh at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. New Zealand skipper Tim Southee in just 5.2 overs managed to achieve what no bowler has managed in Test cricket since 1986. He became the first bowler in 37 years to take a wicket in Test cricket without conceding a single run (at least 30 balls bowled).
 

After Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first, Southee opened the bowling. He started with a maiden over against Mahmudul Hasan Joy. It was the same story in his next over as well. In the third over, Joy managed to rotate the strike but via leg byes.

After bowling three overs, he took himself off the attack on a track that assisted the spinners from the first session. He did not bowl a single over for the rest of the first session. In the second session, he started with two maiden overs, one each against Mushfiqur Rahim and Shahadal Hossain. Once again, he introduced left-arm spinners Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner. He did not bowl again in the second session.
 

In the 67th over, Southee took the ball and ended Shorfiul Islam's stay at the crease with a length ball. An outside edge carried to wicketkeeper Tom Blundell as Southee helped his side bowl out Bangladesh for 172.

Apart from Southee, Patel took a couple of wickets whereas Santner and Glenn Phillips registered three wickets each. Meanwhile, Rahim was given out obstructing the field as he tried to pick the ball up after defending when it was not dead. 

After a terrific bowling display, New Zealand batters could not step up to the task. Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam ran riot in the third session to reduce them to 55/5 in just 12.4 overs. After 15 wickets fell on Day 1, Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips will face an uphill task to take a lead.

The second Test of the two-Test series is likely to be wrapped up in under three days as batters are finding it difficult to tackle the spinners.
