It was a consolation wicket for Jess Jonassen in Trinbago Knight Riders' (TKR) first match of the Women's Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2024. But Jonassen celebrated it by doing TKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan's iconic pose by raising her arms.

The incident happened in the 15th over of the innings. Australia's left-arm spinner Jonassen knocked over Aaliyah Alleyne. She scored 11 runs from 16 balls. Barbados Royals' score was 88/3 and they needed 26 more runs to win from 33 balls.

Earlier, Jonassen got the wicket of Barbados Royals' Sri Lankan opener Chamari Athapaththu. She was dismissed lbw by Jonassen in the second over of the innings. The Sri Lankan captain scored five runs from six balls.

Matthews hits fifty in run chase

Skipper Hayley Matthews' unbeaten 56-ball 67 helped Royals win the match by seven wickets in hand and 17 balls to spare. On the other end, Laura Harris remained unbeaten for 14 off seven balls.

Earlier, Royals skipper won the toss and opted to bowl first. Trinbago Knight Riders suffered a batting collapse as they found themselves struggling for 37/5 in eighth over. Jonassen could not make an impact with the bat. She came out to bat at no.5 and lost her wicket to Qiana Joseph for a six-ball duck.

Deandra Dottin scored 28 runs from 26 balls. Shikha Pandey turned out to be the top run-scorer with 30 runs from 34 balls. The only other batter who scored in double digits was Zaid James. She scored 22 runs from 18 balls.

The contributions from lower order batters helped them post 113/9. For Trinbago Knight Riders' Chinelle Henry, Matthews and Amanda-Jade Wellington bagged two wickets each.

Barbados Royals on top of points table

This was Barbados Royals' second win of the tournament. In the WCPL 2024 opener, Royals registered a thrilling one-wicket win over Lauren Winfield-Hill's side at Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad.

In their next clash, Trinbago Knight Riders will go up against Guyana Amazon Warriors on August 23. On the other hand, after a three-day break, Barbados Royals will lock horns with Guyana Amazon Warriors.
