With the announcement of India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad just two weeks away, speculation regarding the team's composition is only rising. A recent report from Dainik Jagran has thrown a curveball into the mix, suggesting that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli might be paired as India's opening batsmen for the marquee event. This comes as a surprise to many, as the general expectation was for either the young guns Yashasvi Jaiswal or Shubman Gill to open alongside Rohit Sharma. It was learnt that India captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar held a meeting at BCCI headquarters last week to take key decisions with imminent T20 World Cup. The report suggests that the possibility of Virat Kohli opening the batting for India at the T20 World Cup was a topic of serious discussion during this meeting.

Virat Kohli seeks clarity from selectors on T20 World Cup

Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Virat Kohli's inclusion in India's T20 World Cup squad, set to be announced in two weeks, has reportedly been settled. While his place in the ODI team wasn't guaranteed after the World Cup last year, recent developments have solidified his position. Initially, Kohli's role in the T20 setup remained uncertain. However, following his availability for the Afghanistan home series and subsequent return to T20Is alongside Rohit Sharma, things shifted.  While he batted in his preferred number 3 position during those matches, partnering with the young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, the upcoming World Cup may see a change in strategy.

Dainik Jagran also reported that Kohli sought clarity from the selection committee regarding his World Cup participation. Notably, the report suggests the committee responded with a surprising opening role for Kohli.

Kohli's track record as an opener

Kohli has regularly opened for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in recent IPL seasons.  In fact, his current performance in the IPL is nothing short of stellar, currently holding the Orange Cap with a staggering 361 runs in just seven matches, boasting a commendable strike rate of 147 and already having a century under his belt.

While Virat Kohli opening the batting for India in the T20 World Cup might seem like a new strategy, it's not entirely uncharted territory for the star batsman. Kohli's journey in international cricket actually began as an opener. He debuted in this position during an ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2008.

Over time, he transitioned to the number 3 spot, establishing himself as a dominant force in that position.  However, his record as a T20I opener remains impressive. In his nine outings as a T20I opener, Kohli has amassed a staggering 400 runs.  His average of 57 in this role is even higher than his overall T20I average of 51.  Furthermore, his strike rate undergoes a significant jump, climbing from 138 to a blistering 161 when he opens.

Perhaps the most convincing argument for Kohli as an opener is his only T20I century.  This record-breaking feat, the highest individual score by an Indian in the shortest format, came during the Asia Cup 2022 while opening the batting against Afghanistan. The one instance of Kohli opening alongside Rohit Sharma also yielded positive results.  Against England, their opening partnership contributed a massive 94 runs in just nine overs, laying the foundation for a 224-run total.  Kohli himself top-scored for India in that match with a brilliant 80 runs off 52 balls.

These statistics and past performances paint a compelling picture. Kohli's experience and impressive numbers as an opener suggest he could excel in this role again for the World Cup.  The potential reunion at the top of the order with Rohit Sharma adds another exciting dimension to India's batting strategy. Only time will tell if this bold move by the selectors proves to be a game-changer for Team India.

Kohli-Rohit Reunion

The prospect of Virat Kohli opening alongside Rohit Sharma in the T20 World Cup presents both opportunities and challenges for the Indian team.

This strategy would create a vacancy in the middle order, potentially paving the way for power hitters like Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, or Riyan Parag.  These aggressive batsmen could take the attack to the opposition after the powerplay overs, providing a much-needed boost to the middle order.  Furthermore, Suryakumar Yadav could potentially bat at number 3, allowing him to face more deliveries and exert a greater impact on the match.

However, this shift comes at a cost.  The most likely casualty would be young talent Yashasvi Jaiswal.  While Jaiswal was initially considered the frontrunner for the opening slot, his struggles in the initial stages of the IPL have caused a shift in the selectors' focus. Shubman Gill's consistent performance in the IPL has made him a strong contender as the backup opener.   Despite Gill's impressive form, Jaiswal still holds a potential advantage with his left-handed batting. This would provide valuable diversity at the top of the order, offering a different challenge to opposing bowlers. The selection committee faces a difficult decision.  Do they prioritize Gill's current form and success in the IPL, or do they value Jaiswal's left-handed presence and long-term potential? Only time will tell who will secure the crucial role as backup opener alongside the potentially reunited opening pair of Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
