Virat Kohli smiles as Kusal Mendis throws his helmet in frustration after DRS goes India's way in 2nd ODI; watch viral video
IND vs SL 2nd ODI: Virat Kohli was left smiling as a frustrated Kusal Mendis took off his helmet and threw it on the ground during the second ODI.
India’s top-order batter Virat Kohli had a wry smile on his face as Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis threw his helmet in frustration after DRS decision went India’s way. Sri Lankan players were not happy with the on-field umpire’s decision getting overturned and expressed their disappointment as Kohli survived.
The incident took place in the 15th over. After Kohli hit a boundary off Akila Dananjaya's bowling, he was beaten by spin and was hit on the back foot in front of the stumps. The on-field umpire gave him out. Kohli walked up to his batting partner Shubman Gill and then opted for a review. The ultraedge showed a spike when the ball passed the bat. The decision was immediately reversed by third umpire Joel Wilson leaving Sri Lankan players in disbelief.
As ‘not out’ was displayed on the big screen, Kusal Mendis took his helmet off and threw it on the ground. Kohli just walked away with a smile on his face. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka had an animated chat with umpire Raveendra Wimalasiri. Also, Sri Lanka's interim coach Sanath Jayasuriya was displeased with the decision and had a conversation with the reserve umpire. There was a long delay in the play after the DRS.
Kohli gets out lbw again
Kohli was batting on 11 runs from seven balls when the decision was reversed. However, he could not make the most of it. Under-pressure after Jeffrey Vandersay dismissed Shubman Gill and Shivam Dube in the 18th over, Kohli was dismissed lbw in the 20th over. This time Vandersay got the better of him. Once again, Kohli had a conversation with his batting partner. However, Axar Patel advised him against using the DRS and Kohli walked off. He scored 14 runs from 19 balls. When Kohli got out, India were 123/4.
Jayasuriya’s exchange with Kohli
After Vandersay’s six-fer helped Sri Lanka beat India by 32 runs, during the customary handshake, Jayasuriya seemed to have a conversation with Kohli regarding the DRS as well.
Meanwhile, Kohli is yet to fire in the ODI series. In the first ODI, he could not convert a good start into a big score. He was dismissed lbw by Wanindu Hasaranga for a 32-ball 24.
