'We play IPL, domestic cricket to get into Indian team': Yuzvendra Chahal's first reaction to selection in T20 World Cup 2024 squad

India’s experienced leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal considers it an achievement after earning his place in T20 World Cup 2024 squad. On the back of his performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Chahal knocked on selectors’ doors. He said that he plays the IPL and domestic cricket to get into the Indian team.

“For the WC (you can congratulate me for that). We play IPL, domestic cricket to get into the Indian team and that's my biggest achievement. I think I played there (West Indies and USA) last July, but when I was out of the Indian team; I played domestic T20s and cricket keeps going on,” he told the broadcasters before Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) away clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

While Chahal considers SRH batters a challenge, he emphasised that he is not afraid to get hit because of his experience at Chinnaswamy Stadium.

“SRH are playing well especially all their batters from the top to number 7, it will be a challenge here. I have played 40-45 matches at the Chinnaswamy, so the fear is not there (of getting hit) and if you bowl your best ball, it will be enough for any batter. They say it is a batters game but this is a team game, you reach the top when 7-8 players do well in every game,” he added.

Chahal concedes 6 sixes

Chahal’s good run in the IPL 2024 ended against SRH as he went for 62 runs in his quota of four overs. He broke the record for most runs conceded by a wrist spinner in an innings in IPL history. He was hit for a couple of sixes each by Travis Head, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen.

He is also sixth in the race of purple cap race and only spinner after from Delhi Capitals’ (DC) Kuldeep Yadav in the top 10.
