While Tom Kohler-Cadmore's batting performance in his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL 2024 clash against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Wednesday, May 15 may not have been impressive, it was his protective gear that stole the spotlight.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore's eye-catching neck gear steals the show

During the match against Punjab Kings at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, Kohler-Cadmore sported a piece of innovative neck device that left many cricket fans scratching their heads. Some speculated it might be a mere fashion statement, while others wondered if it was a health-tracking device.

What is Q-Collar device?

The unique device worn around Kohler-Cadmore's neck was a Q-Collar, a piece of equipment designed to potentially reduce the risk of head injuries.

Developed by Q30 Innovations, the Q-Collar works by applying gentle pressure to the jugular veins. This slight increase in blood volume within the head helps to minimize brain movement upon impact, a major factor in concussions and other brain injuries.

The importance of proper head and neck protection in cricket has come under increased scrutiny in recent years, particularly following the tragic death of Phil Hughes in 2014. While traditionally used by American football players in the NFL, Kohler-Cadmore's adoption of the Q-Collar marks a potential turning point for cricket. The Q-Collar, costs around $199 (around Rs 16.6 thousand) offers a potentially life-saving solution.

Royals falter again, Curran stars for Punjab Kings

Tom Kohler-Cadmore's return to Rajasthan Royals lineup after a long stint on the bench couldn't change the team's fortune. Despite replacing the departed Jos Buttler, the England batter could only manage 18 runs in 23 balls in RR's five-wicket defeat against PBKS. His underwhelming performance extended Rajasthan's woes, as they slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat in the IPL 2024. After electing to bat first, the Royals were restricted to a meager 144/9. Credit for this bowling dominance goes to the Punjab Kings attack, particularly captain Sam Curran, Harshal Patel, and Rahul Chahar, who each picked up two wickets.

Punjab's chase initially appeared shaky as they found themselves at a precarious 48/4 after seven overs. However, a magnificent knock by Sam Curran (63* off 41 balls) turned the tide in their favor.  Curran's unbeaten innings steered Punjab comfortably home with five wickets and seven balls to spare.  While Avesh Khan and Yuzvendra Chahal managed two wickets each for the Royals, it wasn't enough to prevent their downfall.

Both teams will conclude their league stage campaigns on Sunday, May 19. Rajasthan will face Kolkata Knight Riders, while Punjab Kings lock horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
