The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on September 8 announced India’s squad for the first Test against Bangladesh. While Yash Dayal received his maiden call-up, there was one major change in the squad. India’s pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was no longer captain Rohit Sharma’s deputy. No vice-captain was named for the first Test against Bangladesh at home starting September 19.

Bumrah who made his Test captaincy debut in 2022 on English soil when Rohit was unwell has not been given the vice-captain role considering his workload.

Earlier, the selectors had made it clear before that in order to avoid any injuries to Bumrah they will rest him from time to time.

There were also reports that Bumrah may be rested for the Test series against Bangladesh as they need his services against New Zealand followed by the all-important Border-Gavaskar series when India tour Australia. Even though Bumrah has been selected in the squad, he may be rested for one of the Tests against Bangladesh. However, the selectors don’t want to take any chances against a high-on-confidence Bangladesh who scripted history on Pakistan soil with a Test series win.

"In the case of Bumrah, he knows his body the best and it will be up to him if he wants to play in the Tests against Bangladesh. The team management and selectors are very clear that India needs a 120 per cent fit Jasprit Bumrah for all five Tests against Australia Down Under. Before that, there is New Zealand in India, where he will probably play and get ready for the sterner tests," an official told the PTI.

Pandya was removed from role for similar reason

Also, when Hardik Pandya was removed as vice-captain of the T20I side and Suryakumar Yadav was named the skipper ahead of him, chief selector Ajit Agarkar made it clear that they did it because of the all-rounder’s history of injuries. Shubman Gill was named vice-captain in the limited-overs format after he led a second-string Indian side to a 4-1 series win against Zimbabwe.
