Will Yuvraj Singh contest Lok Sabha elections? World Cup-winning all-rounder says, 'My passion lies in supporting and helping people...'
Yuvraj Singh dismissed speculations regarding his potential candidacy in the Lok Sabha elections and underscored his ongoing dedication to philanthropy through his foundation.
Legendary Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh on March 1 denied media reports suggesting that he will contest the Lok Sabha elections 2024 from the Gurdaspur constituency. Yuvraj took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to clarify that he will continue to help people via his foundation but will not contest elections.
"Contrary to media reports, I'm not contesting elections from Gurdaspur. My passion lies in supporting and helping people in various capacities, and I will continue to do so through my foundation You We Can. Let's continue making a difference together to the best of our abilities," Yuvraj wrote on X.
Reports suggested that the 42-year-old would contest the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket and replace Bollywood superstar Sunny Deol.
The rumours floated in the Indian media when Yuvraj met Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Yuvraj will be seen in action in the Legends Cricket Trophy 2024 which is scheduled to start on March 8 at Pallekele Stadium in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Yuvraj will play for NY Superstar Strikers.
Yuvraj’s illustrious career
Yuvraj's last appearance on the cricket field was in October 2022. He helped Sachin Tendulkar-led India Legends to a 33-run win over Sri Lanka Lengends in the Road Safety World Series final.
Yuvraj played a massive role in India's T20 World Cup 2007 and ODI World Cup 2011 wins. He created history in the inaugural T20 World Cup by smashing England's Stuart Broad for six consecutive sixes and reaching his half-century from just 12 balls. His record for fastest T20I fifty stood for more than 16 years.
Yuvraj battled cancer and made his return to the field showing his fighting spirit on and off the field. He announced his retirement in 2019. His last appearance on the international stage was in an ODI match against West Indies where he scored 39 runs from 55 balls.
The southpaw has represented India in 40 Tests, 304 ODIs and 58 T20Is. He has 8,701 runs in ODIs including 14 centuries and 52 half-centuries. He has a total of 148 wickets on the international stage including 111 in ODIs.
Yuvraj has represented Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), now-defunct Pune Warriors, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI).
