Gautam Gambhir, during his recent interaction with R Ashwin on latter's YouTube channel talked about the Team India's selection process. During the conversation, the KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir outlined an ideal strategy for Team India's selectors to consider when selecting a squad for any tournament. Last month, BCCI revealed India's 15-member T20 World Cup squad which left many debating over the inclusion and exclusion of certain players. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar faced criticism, with a main surprise being the omission of Rinku Singh, an explosive batter for both India and his IPL team, KKR. He was included as a reserve player, but not in the main squad.

Meanwhile, former India captain Gautam Gambhir discussed the selection process and recommended that selectors choose players for the national team based on their performances in domestic competitions. He suggested that the Test team should be selected from the Ranji Trophy participants, the ODI team from the Vijay Hazare Trophy competitors, and the T20I team from those playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"T20 World Cup and T20 side for India should be selected from the IPL. For the 50-over format, should be selected from Vijay Hazare and your Test side should be selected from your first-class cricket, red-ball cricket. As simple as it can get. Otherwise, if you start selecting people in the 50-over format or even in red-ball cricket from the IPL competition, I think you are making a lot of shortcuts because a lot of these young players do not focus on red-ball cricket and the 50-over format and then you're literally walking on the edge," Gambhir told R Ashwin on the 'Kutti Stories With Ash' YouTube show.

Gambhir's KKR have advanced to the knockout phase of the IPL 2024. KKR became the first team to secure a spot in the 2024 IPL playoffs. The Knight Riders also led the league stage, accumulating 20 points across 14 matches. Gambhir has been instrumental in this remarkable performance, playing a key role in strategy and team selection. KKR will now take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 Qualifier 1 on May 21.
