Zimbabwe wicketkeeper surpasses Dinesh Karthik, breaks 90-year-old record in historic Test against Ireland by conceding 42 byes

In the first-ever Test match between Ireland and Zimbabwe, the latter will regret giving too many freebies. Zimbabwe were bowled out for 210 in the first innings. In reply, Ireland were in a similar position and only Peter Moor looked impressive but they managed to get a lead. Zimbabwe conceded as many as 59 extras including 42 byes. A young Clive Madande on his Test debut had a horrid time behind the stumps as he conceded 42 byes in an innings. In doing so, he broke the 90-year-old record for most byes in a single innings of a Test match. 
 

The previous record belonged to legendary England wicketkeeper Les Ames who conceded 37 runs in an innings. He is followed by India's Dinesh Karthik and England's Matt Prior who conceded 35 byes each. Karthik did it against Pakistan in 2007 whereas Prior struggled against West Indies in 2009.
 

Despite what the scorecard shows, Madande was not too bad behind the stumps. Zimbabwe bowlers lacked control and bowled several deliveries way down the leg side out of his reach. However, the 24-year-old did struggle to tackle the late swing at Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast.

Madande fails with bat too

Earlier, Madande did not get off to a desired start with the bat. He wanted to make a statement straight away and danced down the track against Andy McBrine. However, he mistimed the shot and was caught by Craig Young at mid-off. 
 

Madande will have another chance to contribute with the bat on Day 3 of the Test. At the end of Day 2, Zimbabwe were 12 for no loss. They are still trailing by 28 runs.
 

Madande’s maiden catch in Test cricket

Meanwhile Madande's only catch in the first innings of his Test debut while donning the gloves was Moor. Blessing Muzarabani forced an edge off Moor's bat. The opener scored 79 runs from 105 balls and played a major role in keeping the scoreboard ticking despite wickets falling from the other end.
