India set to face World Champions Germany in Paris Olympics semis: Here's what happened when they met last time, check full head-to-head record here
Paris Olympics 2024: India have had an edge over current world champions Germany. However, the last time they met was in FIH Pro League where Germany won 3-2.
Harmanpreet Singh's India are set to take on world champions Germany in their semifinal clash at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Indian side overcame great odds to beat Great Britain 4-2 on penalties after Amit Rohidas was shown the red card by referee.
The semifinal clash will take place on August 6. Before the clash, here’s India’s head-to-head record against the World Champions –
India and Germany have gone up against 18 times so far. India have an edge over Germany with eight wins compared to six losses whereas four ended in a draw. Naturally, India lead in the goal-scoring department too with 41 goals to their name compared to Germany's 37.
The last time they met on the Olympics stage was in Tokyo Olympics 2020. In the bronze medal match, India beat Germany 5-4 to end their medal drought at the Olympics. However, the last time India and Germany met was in a FIH Pro League clash. Germany ended up beating India 3-2.
Before the defeat in FIH Pro League, India registered five consecutive wins over Germany.
No Rohidas for semifinal clash
India will be missing the services of their key defender Amit Rohidas in the semifinal. He has been handed one-match suspension following the red card with more than 40 minutes left in the quarterfinal.
"Amit Rohidas was suspended for one match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during the India vs Great Britain match on August 4," a FIH statement read.
"The suspension affects match No. 35 (India's semi-final match against Germany), where Amit Rohidas will not participate and India will play with a squad of 15 players only."
Hockey India questions umpiring standards
However, Hockey India has lodged an appeal against Rohidas' suspension. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) jury bench will take a decision on the matter.
Hockey India has raised concerns about the quality of umpiring overall including "coaching of a goalkeeper from behind the goalpost and use of a video tablet by a goalkeeper during the shoot-out".
