'Tu suicide kar le.. Ye kya jeewan hai': Paralympics gold medalist Navdeep Singh recalls heartbreaking past

At the Paris Games, Paralympian gold medallist Navdeep Singh told a stirring tale of persistence and victory. After initially winning a silver medal, Navdeep's accomplishment was upgraded to a gold medal, signifying a turning point in his sporting career. His outstanding achievement in the 2024 Paralympic Games men's javelin F41 final made the country very proud. However, Navdeep said in an emotional podcast interview that he had many personal struggles along the way to success.

Due to his dwarfism, Navdeep was criticised and rejected by society from an early age. He discussed the cruel jokes he had to endure as a result of his illness on the podcast. He revealed how some others had even suggested that he think about killing himself, denigrating his value, and minimizing his potential.

"Aapko kya lagta hai hume hausla kaha se aata hai? Jab wo bolte hain ki tu kuch nahi kar sakta. Isse acha to tu suicide kar le. Ye kya jeewan hai tera [Where do you think we get our courage from? When they say you can't do anything. It's better if you just commit suicide. What kind of life is this for you?]," Navdeep said while revealing the harsh past he had to endure.

Navdeep was not broken by these harsh remarks; on the contrary, they strengthened his resolve to disprove his detractors. In addition to being a sporting triumph, his gold medal from the Paris Paralympics made a strong message against prejudice and uncertainty.

Navdeep's victory occurred after he threw the javelin 47.32 meters in the championship round, winning the coveted gold medal. His triumph silenced many who questioned his capacity because of his illness. Navdeep shed tears as well during the podcast when talking about his late father, who had been a rock for him throughout his journey.

"Shuruwat unhone karwai thi. Har jagah saath they [He was the one who got me started. He was with me every step of the way],” Navdeep said, reflecting on his father's impact, though he is no longer alive to witness his son's ultimate success," he added.
