Paris Olympics, Day 4 roundup: Manu, Sarabjot add bronze to tally, Satwik-Chirag and Men's Hockey team reach quarterfinals but Preeti's loss creates controversy

Paris Olympics, Day 4: Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot Singh won a bronze medal whereas Harmanpreet Singh-led men's hockey team and shuttlers Satwijsairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty reached quarterfinals.

It turned out to be a mixed bag of a day for the Indian contingent at the Paris Olympics 2024 on July 30. A bronze medal was added to India's tally as Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh created history in the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event but there were a few close misses that led to athletes crashing out of the tournament.
 

Manu, Sarabjot script history

Manu and Sarabjot beat South Korean duo by 16-10 to win bronze medal. This is India's first medal in a mixed team shooting event in Olympics history. While it was Sarabjot's first Olympic medal, Manu became the first athlete of independent India to win two medals in a single edition of Olympics.
 

Men’s hockey team into quarterfinals

Harmanpreet Singh-led India reached the quarterfinal unbeaten after three Pool B games. Harmanpreet's brace helped India beat New Zealand 2-0. India are currently on the top of their group with seven points from three encounters. India are yet to face Belgium and Australia in their group stage games.
 

Rower Panwar bows out

In the men's singles sculls quarter-final, Balraj Panwar finished fifth in heat 4. Rower Panwar bowed out of medal contention as he could not finish in top three from his group who advanced the semifinals.

Dhiraj on target but misses by barest of margins

Archer Dhiraj Bommadevara would consider himself unlucky that he shot at 10/10 as his final shot but still could not make it past round of 32. After a 5-5 draw, his match with Canada's Eric Peters went into a shootout. Both the archers shot a 10/10 but Peters; shot was 2.4 cm close to the centre of the target.

 

Bhajan Kaur sealed her place in round of 16 as she defeated Poland's Wioleta Myszor in the round of 32. Earlier, she beat Indonesia's Syifa Nurafifah Kamal. 
 

Reddy-Shetty into quarterfinals

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat Indonesia's Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian in straight games to finish at the top of their group and reach the quarterfinals. Rankireddy and Shetty won 21-13, 21-13 as they finished the games in just 40 minutes.

Panghal, Jaismine and Preeti crash out

Amit Panghal who competed in men's 51kg flyweight category crashed out of round of 16 as he lost to Zambia's Patrick Chinyemba by 1-4 in split decision. 
 

Jaismine Lamboria in women's 57kg category lost to Philippines' Nesthy Petecio in round of 32. Nesthy is a silver medal winner from Tokyo 2020 and former world champion.
 

Preeti Pawar put up a strong show against the pan-American champion Colombia's Yeni Arias. The 20-year-old lost to Arias in the final round via a split decision score of 3-2. The match has created controversy too as there were South American judges who seemed in favour of the Colombian
