Paris Olympics: When did Pakistan last outrank India on the Olympic medal table? Take a look
Pakistan's single gold medal placed it significantly higher in the Paris 2024 Olympic medal table than India, despite India winning six medals overall.
The Paris Olympics 2024 medal table has witnessed a historic turn of events. Pakistan, with a single gold medal secured by Arshad Nadeem in the men's javelin, has surpassed India in the overall standings. India, despite its impressive six-medal haul, will find itself behind Pakistan due to the gold medal's higher ranking value. Nadeem's victory marked a groundbreaking moment for Pakistan, ending a 32-year wait for an Olympic medal in the javelin event. Nadeem's record-breaking throw of 92.97m not only secured gold but also etched his name in history as Pakistan's first individual Olympic gold medalist. Notably, India's sole medal in the javelin came from Neeraj Chopra, who clinched the silver.
India's Medal Haul at Paris Olympics
India's medal tally at the Paris Olympics was highlighted by five bronze medals in addition to Neeraj Chopra's silver. Shooter Manu Bhaker was a standout performer, securing bronze in both the women's 10m air pistol and the mixed team event alongside Sarabjot Singh. The Indian hockey team clinched a bronze medal for the second consecutive Olympics, while shooter Sarabjot Singh and wrestler Aman Sahrawat also contributed to the medal count.
There remains a possibility of additional medals for India. Wrestler Reetika Hooda has a chance to win bronze if she progresses through the repechage round. Furthermore, the Court of Arbitration for Sport is set to deliver a verdict on Vinesh Phogat's appeal for a silver medal.
India vs Pakistan in Olympic Games
The 2024 Paris Olympics marked a significant turning point in the Olympic rivalry between India and Pakistan. For the first time in 32 years, Pakistan finished ahead of India in the medal tally. This is the eighth occasion in Olympic history where Pakistan has achieved this feat.
Previously, Pakistan surpassed India in the medal count at the 1960, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1984, 1988, and 1992 Olympics.
In 1960, Pakistan clinched gold in hockey and bronze in wrestling, while India managed only one hockey bronze. Pakistan repeated its hockey gold in 1968, while India secured a bronze. The trend continued in 1972 with Pakistan claiming silver and India bronze in hockey. In 1976, Pakistan won hockey bronze, while India drew a blank. This dominance persisted in 1984 with Pakistan's hockey gold and India's medal-less performance. The pattern repeated in 1988, with India again failing to win a medal, while Pakistan secured a bronze in boxing. The 1992 Barcelona Olympics saw Pakistan clinch hockey bronze, further extending its dominance over India.
