Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra missed out on winning the Diamond League 2024 trophy by just one centimetre. Neeraj finished second for second year in a row. His best throw in Brussels was 87.86 metre.

Grenada's Anderson Peters who has been dominating the Diamond League standings won the title. The Paris Olympics 2024 bronze medallist came up with an 87.87m throw in his first attempt which turned out to the winner. The third spot was grabbed by Germany's Julian Weber with an 85.97m throw.

The 26-year-old Neeraj had a solid start on a cold night in Brussels where the temperature dropped to 12-13 degree celsius. His first throw was 86.82m. In his second attempt, he fell behind with 83.49m. His third throw of 87.86m helped him finish second in the final. His last three throws in the final were 82.04m, 83.30m and 86.46m.

Moldova's Andrian Mardare finished fourth with 82.79m throw. He was followed by Japan's Genki Dean (80.37m), Arthur Felfner (79.86m) and Belgium's Timothy Herman (76.46m).

Earlier, Neeraj had finished second in two legs of Diamond League 2024. He had 14 points from two meetings ā€“ Doha and Lausanne on May 10 and August 22 respectively ā€“ and qualified for the final despite missing the Zurich leg. He was fourth in the standings.

Prize money

Neeraj will get USD 12,000 as part of the prize money whereas Peters will fly back home with USD 30,000. Peters also booked a wild card entry in the World Athletics Championships.

Finished second in previous Diamond League final too

Last year, Neeraj could not defend his title at the Diamond League. His best throw in the final was 83.80m. Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch grabbed the top spot with 84.24m.

Neeraj to head for surgery?

Neerajā€™s throw of 87.86m was far from his season best which he recorded in Paris Olympics 2024 to win the silver medal. The Tokyo Olympics gold medallist is likely to have surgery as he did not look at his 100 per cent in the Diamond League final.
