A Lionel Messi-less Inter Miami suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat to Mexican giants Monterrey in the riveting first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup 2024 quarterfinal on April 4 at the Chase Stadium in Florida. Despite a strong start and taking the lead in the first half through defender Tomas Aviles, Inter Miami’s momentum was hindered when David Ruiz received a red card late in the second half and left the Major League Soccer (MLS) side with ten men. Monterrey seized the numerical advantage with Maximilliano Meza equalising in the 69th minute after a corner kick. Initially, the goal was reviewed by VAR and ultimately awarded.

Inter Miami's Resilience Shatters in 88th Minute

Inter Miami's resilience was further shattered in the 88th minute by a sensational strike from Jorge Rodriguez. Following a scramble in the box, Rodriguez received the ball and unleashed a curling right-footed shot that nestled into the back of the net.

The outcome leaves Inter Miami facing an uphill battle in the away leg if they are to progress to the semifinals. The potential return of Messi from injury could bolster their chances.

Messi Dealing with Hamstring Injury

Inter Miami missing the star power of Lionel Messi, who is dealing with a right hamstring injury and has not played for Miami since March 13. Messi left the game due to a leg injury as Inter Miami thrashed Nashville 3-1 in the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup round-of-16 matchup on March 14.

The 26-year-old also missed Argentina’s recent exhibition matches against EI Salvador and Costa Rica.

Inter Miami assistant coach Javier Morales had expressed hope for Messi’s return after a three-game absence. But, the Argentine superstar was not included in the lineup for the match on April 4. Notably, Messi's former Barcelona teammates Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba were among the starters for Inter Miami.

The second leg of the quarterfinal is slated for April 10 in Mexico.
