Premier League round-up: Arsenal retain top spot with 2-1 win over Wolves as Manchester United's downfall continues
Arsenal extends its lead in the Premier League with a 2-1 win, while Newcastle's 1-0 victory over Manchester United sees them climb to fifth.
Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, now holding a four-point lead above second-placed Manchester City. Meanwhile, Newcastle secured a 1-0 victory against Manchester United, propelling them to fifth place in the table.
Newcastle's Anthony Gordon scored the lone goal, securing their win over Manchester United and marking their third consecutive victory against the Red Devils in all competitions — a feat not achieved since January 1922. This successful streak follows Newcastle's recent triumphs over Chelsea (4-1) and a draw with Paris St Germain (1-1) in the Champions League.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "I couldn't be happier with the players tonight. The performances we put in against three top teams were brilliant, so that will give confidence, and when we get some players back, we can push on even further."
Gordon scored his sixth league goal of the season in the second half, capitalising on a defensive lapse from Manchester United as he finished a Kieran Trippier cross at the far post.
Arsenal maintain top spot domination
In another match, Arsenal secured an early advantage against Wolves with goals from Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard at The Emirates. Despite a late rally from Wolves, Arsenal held on for the 2-1 victory.
The win extended Arsenal's lead at the top of the table to four points, marking their largest lead since April. Mikel Arteta's team now has 33 points from 14 games, with Manchester City trailing on 29 points ahead of their match against Tottenham Hotspur. Liverpool and Aston Villa, both with 28 points, are also in action on Sunday against Fulham and Bournemouth, respectively.
While Arsenal is enjoying a consistent run, Arteta remains cautious, mindful of the previous season where they ultimately collapsed in the title race. However, their current form suggests a team ready for a sustained challenge in the Premier League.
