Australian Open men's doubles champions Rohan Bopanna, Matthew Ebden crash out of US Open with loss in straight sets in just 66 minutes
US Open 2024: Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden were beaten in little over an hour by Argentine pair Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni.
Australian Open men's doubles champions Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden's run in the US Open 2024 came to an end with a defeat in straight sets to Argentine pair Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni. The second seeded Bopanna-Ebden were outplayed as they lost 1-6, 5-7 in a match that ended in just an hour and six minutes.
In the first set, Bopanna and Ebden were dominated by 16th seeded Argentine pair as they broke the service twice. They made a comeback in the second set as the score line was 5-5 before they lost a crucial break point in the 11th game.
Gonzalez and Molteni will now go up against Germany's Tim Putz and Kevin Krawietz in the quarterfinal clash on September 3.
After losing the men's doubles event, it will be interesting to see if Bopanna has enough gas left in the tank to return to US Open next year. The 44-year-old has already retired from Davis Cup.
Bopanna to face off his partner in US Open
However, Bopanna's run in US Open hasn't come to an end yet. He will face his men's doubles partner in the mixed doubles event. Bopanna and Indonesia's Aldila Sutjiadi will go up against Ebden who has paired with Czech Republic's Barbora Krejcikova. They are seeded fourth in the tournament. With Bopanna and Ebden knowing each other’s game inside out, it will be a clash to watch out for.
How India fared in US Open
