Carlos Alcaraz captured his first French Open title following a thrilling five-set victory over Alexander Zverev on Sunday, June 9, at Philippe-Chatrier. The 21-year-old Spaniard took 4 hours and 19 minutes to secure the win with scores of 6-2, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. Carlos Alcaraz creates history with French Open title
At the young age of 21, Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz rewrote history on Sunday (June 9th) by becoming the youngest ever to win a Grand Slam title on all three major surfaces (clay, grass, hard court). This incredible feat was achieved after defeating Olympic champion Alexander Zverev in a thrilling five-set French Open final (6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2). This victory places Alcaraz alongside his fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal as the only players under 22 to conquer Roland-Garros since 2000 (Nadal achieved this remarkable feat three times in a row, from 2005 to 2007).
From the outset, Alcaraz took control with an early break of serve and further solidified his lead with a second break. Zverev responded vigorously in the second set, breaking Alcaraz’s serve twice and excelling with his first serves, capturing 80 percent of the points (16 out of 20).
The momentum continued for Zverev in the third set, where he quickly went up 5-2. However, Alcaraz displayed remarkable resilience in the fourth set, ensuring the match went to a decisive fifth set by earning a double break for a 4-2 lead, though Zverev managed a break to maintain pressure.
Despite two opportunities to break Alcaraz's serve, Zverev failed to capitalize, allowing Alcaraz to secure his third break and win the set.
The final set proved to be a dramatic conclusion, with Alcaraz breaking early to take control. Zverev fought valiantly, but Alcaraz eventually closed out the match with ease.
