The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is expected to have a meeting in Dubai on March 14 or 15 to finalise the venue for Asia Cup 2023. Pakistan are hosts for ODI Asia Cup 2023 to be played in September but the tournament is likely to be moved out. In ACC’s last meeting in Bahrain, it was decided that the final call will be taken in the next meeting.
Meanwhile a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) source told Sports Tak on the condition of anonymity that no discussion around shifting of Asia Cup 2023 from Pakistan has taken place.
“We have not given any option. There is no point of moving some matches to neutral venue. We stand where we were in the last meeting. All matches should be played in Pakistan. We want this tournament to be played here and nowhere else," the source said.
On the other hand, International Cricket Council (ICC) is also drafting a meeting in Dubai with the board members in mid-March. The agenda of the meeting is yet to be revealed.
Earlier, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah had said India will not travel to Pakistan for Asia Cup.
“Neutral venue for Asia Cup is not unprecedented and we have decided that we will not travel to Pakistan. It's the govt which decides over the permission of our team visiting Pakistan so we won't comment on that but for the 2023 Asia Cup, it is decided that the tournament will be held at a neutral venue," Shah had said at AGM meeting in October 2022.
PCB chief Najam Sethi in an exclusive interview with Sports Tak had said that politics should be kept out of the sport.
"I don't think so. It has come as a bolt from the blue for us. PCB predecessor Ramiz Raja also expressed his displeasure on India's stance of not playing Asia Cup in Pakistan. At times you want Pakistan to come to India for Asia Cup and then you say you don't want to visit Pakistan for the marquee event. Will India continue to snub Pakistan when Champions Trophy will be played here? If this is the way you want to go, neither you should allow us nor should come to Pakistan. Politics around it should be avoided. BCCI is an independent board unlike PCB, they should take their decisions independently without involving any kind of politics in it," Sethi told Sports Tak.
